A tale of 3 tomato candles & a kitchen chat with Josh and Jason

Listen to this while you're vacuuming.

Bonus for you all this week! I finally bought Descript and edited a fun conversation with my friends Josh and Jason. It’s me going through their fragrance collection. I’m not sure this will be interesting to anyone but our friend group, and maybe not even them, but I think it’s a fun listen, and I edited the heck out of it, so it’s only 17 minutes. We talk about many different fragrances, let me know if you want links to any of them.

Spoiler alert, I still love the Flamingo Estate tomato candle the best.

But first, a tale of three tomato candles. Tomato is my favorite smell for candles in my kitchen. I won’t burn anything else there. I am in endless pursuit of the perfect tomato candle. So, if you have a suggestion, please drop it in the comments.

Danny bought me the Flamingo Estate Tomato candle for Christmas a few years ago. I loved it so much that I used it super sparingly. I’m now on my second one. Jen tried to convince me that Austin Press had an even better tomato candle and gave me their Farmer’s Garden, which I really love and have almost burned through, but it just doesn’t compare to the Flamingo Estate for tomato smell. But the tomato candle I thought would rule them all is the Loewe Tomato candle.

The other two contenders

This is a judgment-free zone, so I don’t want to hear anything about the price of any of these candles, ok? Jen was traveling to Taiwan and had the great idea of buying the Loewe candles we were all coveting there as they’d likely be cheaper. I think they were also sold out in most places in the US. Either way, we agreed it was a good idea, and Jen lugged these candles back for us; if that’s not a sign of a good friend, I don’t know what is. It smelled amazing when I opened the pretty box, and I thought there was no way I would burn it anytime soon. I would enjoy the cold throw it gave and burn through my other tomatoes first. But then I was curious and it just kind of called to me. So last night, I lit it. And you guys, it tunneled! Even after hours of burning, this spency candle did not burn even. I shared with the group, and Jen called it before this was even lit:

Danny suggested tinfoil to even out the burn (André also had this idea) but a candle this expensive, no way would I have to make a tinfoil house on it to even that wax out. In the end, though, that’s exactly what I did.

It’s a beautiful vessel. And I have zero regrets about this purchase. But I gotta say, the Flamingo Estate tomato is still my tomato of choice! And I guess that’s a good thing for my wallet.

Josh's bottles and a photo Josh took of my nails that day.

Do you ever meet people who you instantly click with? Same sense of humor, same weird references, same outlook on life? That’s how it was when I met Jason and Josh and their entire friend group. Elizabeth introduced us all, and now they just kind of feel like family; it’s not easy making friends as an adult, so we all realize how special what we have is.

On this day, I had just come from ZGO in the Castro where Josh and Jason live; I showed them some new bottles I bought and then convinced them I should interview them about their fragrance collection. We sat around in their kitchen and just smelled stuff; this is very much a conversation we’d have in real life. I love the abrupt ending when Josh starts to gossip, and then we realize we should stop recording. Sorry, I can’t share that tea! But I hope you enjoy this one.

Josh, Jason, Men of Blame, and their cat, Mr. Dooley McWaffles.

Smell ya later, friends! And please share your candle recs (especially if they have tomato) in the comments!
